I read an very interesting article yesterday on Rosalind Gardner’s Internet marketing blog.  The article was titled “Reconsidering the Value of Social Marketing“.  The article had a podcast embedded in it that explained how to use social marketing to generate traffic.  I highly recommend you take a look at this article.  Anyways, I know I have been praising squidoo for a while now, but I have not been as proactive as I should have been in adding more lenses (a lense is a web page on squidoo).  So, I decided to go about putting together a lense today to show how I find keywords and make money with my lenses.

Finding a keyword

I have found great joy in using wordtracker for all of my keyword research.  It is fast and the keywords that are recommended are reliable.  I have found using the free yahoo keyword generator has left me hanging to say the least.  I created a number of websites using yahoo keyword research and I was left with websites that did not generate enough money to even continue the websites.  Back to wordtracker.  I love fashion and any affiliate associated with it.  Also, fashion websites make money all year long.  So, doing a little searching around I found the perfect fashion keyword.

dooney burke outlet store | searches:1,239 | Predict:2,185 | Google sites:448 | Google KEI 3,427.00 and the yahoo KEI was even better.

Now, if you don’t know how to read this, if your a paying customer wordtracker will give you direct traffic quotes from Google, Yahoo, and MSN (This was the only keyword generator I could get this information from).  Broken down this information describes that dooney burke outlet store got 1,239 searches in the last 24 hours and it predicts that they keyword will get 2,185 daily.  What makes this keyword even better is that the KEI is above 100.  Anything above 100 with predicted searches of 200 or more is a great keyword.  But this one is excellent.  I will be following up this post with more information on wordtracker.

Now, that I have my keyword I could create a Google AdWords campaign to test the keyword.  I am not really into PPC campaigns so I am just going to create the squidoo lense and work from there.

Lets create the lense

Squidoo has a very easy lense creation wizard that is very intuitive and will not need much explanation.  But this is how I created my lense.

  • 1.  Goto squidoo.com and sign in.  If you have not as of yet became a member click here.

Squidoo login

  • Once logged in hit the link in the top right of your screen to “Make a Lense”.

  • Describe your lense - Here I just put in my keyword, in this case “dooney burke outlet store”

  • Next step, what do you want to do with the lense.  Here pick the easiest option.

  • Next you will create the title and URL for the lense.  You will notice that the keyword that you entered in the beginning is now your title.  Now, it is important to create the lense URL with they keyword also.  For example, my lense is http://www.squidoo.com/dooney-burke-outlet-store.

  • Choose the topic and rate the lense and your done.  The lense has been created.  Now you have to populate it.

Populating your lense is very easy.  Don’t try to make this part of the lense creation complicated.  First, create a introduction.  Edit the introduction with a picture of what you trying to sell and also a short description of why you created this lense or something about the product or service.  Below the introduction link in any websites that my be associated with the product that you are promoting.  This is were social marketing comes into play.  Because squidoo is past the sandbox stage this lense will be index much quicker than most sites.  Also, as this page gets more and more PR it will also pass onto your linked sites.  I also add affiliate links here for fast money.  Next, at the top you should see a button for adding modules.  You need to add 4 or 5 rss modules.

This is the last part of creating a lense, the Elliott style.  I love the rss modules because I can rss eBay auctions into these lenses.  And since they update every half hour I always have fresh content on my sites.  I will explain how to create a eBay RSS feed in a later post.

That is it, now publish that bad boy.  Your lense is complete.  Now, is the task of promoting it and getting it noticed by the search engines.
